Greetings all my fellow Cthuligans. Just wanted to drop a heads up to any of y'all in the San Diego area. It's been a long road, but the documentary film "LOVECRAFT: Fear Of The Unknown" is complete and will premiere at ComiCon 2008 in San Diego on July 24th, 8:00pm.

As a lifelong fan of HPL, creating the music for this project has been a dream realized for me.
I have been invited (along with the production team) to attend the event, and to do a Q & A after the film's screening. It's very exciting to think of how many people will be there, as over 120,000 people attend ComiCon each year. (no pressure.....)

The film features educated insight into the man and his legacy from :

John Carpenter (director - Halloween, The Thing)
Neil Gaiman (author - Fragile Things, American Gods)
Guillermo Del Toro (director - Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy)
Ramsey Campbell (author - Inhabitant of the Lake, Darkest Part of the Woods)
Stuart Gordon (director - Re-Animator, From Beyond)
S.T. Joshi (author/biographer - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life, The Angry Right)
Caitlin R. Kiernan (author - Daughter Of Hounds, Silk)
Andrew Migliore (founder - H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)
Robert Price (author / editor - Crypt of Cthulhu, The Da Vinci Fraud )
Peter Straub (author - Ghost Story, Lost Boy Lost Girl)

The documentary also features creature art from some of the top Lovecraftian artists including Tom Sullivan (artist, "The Evil Dead" and "Call Of Cthulhu" role playing game).

Hope to see any friendly faces there-
IA!

Damn. Took me long enough, didn’t it? But you’ll definitely get your money’s worth with this chapter of “City of Pillars,” as it takes you into the North Tower of the World Trade Center after the impact of the first plane, and…well, let’s just say that the impact is the least of the survivors’ worries. Check it out:

-----
There were three men pushing the stairwell door shut but Raj threw himself into the gap shouting, “No, no, not yet—there’s still someone in there!” and the guys started arguing with him, telling him they had to shut the door or they’d all suffocate, and they were pulling him, trying to get pull him back in so they could shut the door but Raj said, “Stop it, goddamnit, I got him! I got him!”

And then Raj just disappeared.

One second he was there, the next…gone.

One of the men at the door went in after him—I guess they thought he’d gone back into the stairwell for Ray. We all heard the man scream, but it was cut off almost instantly. The last two guys on the door were calling him—“Bob! Bob, what happened?!”—and then the…the worms came through the door.

Well, they looked like worms. Like earthworms, but big and purple, big as firehoses. And covered with ash—there was ash all over them, like they’d come out of the fire…and I think I even saw one of them still burning.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Two of them whipped out of the smoke and wrapped around the man closest to the doorway and he didn’t even have time to say anything—he was gone. They’d pulled him into the smoke. “Close the goddamned door! There’s more of them!” somebody shrieked and then I was throwing myself at the door with a bunch of terrified people and the heavy emergency exit door slammed shut. I had my hands on the door and felt something hammering against the other side. Hammering. Hard. The door was jumping beneath our hands and everyone was saying, “Block the door, block the door.”
-----

Oh, it gets a lot worse than that, too.

So take a look, and lemme know what you think! Here are the links:

That's...uhhh, prettymuch it! I've finally finished the revised third chapter of my serial novel, "City of Pillars," over at <em>Footnotes to the Human Species: http://footnotes.pegritz.com

Have a look at what the Bronx has become eight years after the monstrous horror of 9/11:

Now I noticed the graffiti. Graffiti everywhere—more than I’d ever seen. Almost every building had something spraypainted on it: tags, gang signs, strangely beautiful cartoons and murals…and weird sketches that made me feel antsy. My stomach knotted when I spied the stick-like device again. “Greg?” I asked, pointing. “What is that?”

“What—the graffiti? Idaknow. I think it’s somekinda new gang sign. You see it in Queens, too, and Staten Island, for that matter. Ever since half of Harlem got dumped into the Bronx we’ve had gang trouble like you wouldn’t believe. We even got some genuine homegrown Cthulhu cultists, can you believe that?”

Of course I could: they were everywhere these days. Even San Diego. Every year in early March the lunatics gathered at beaches up and down the West Coast to wade into the chilly waters and sing praises to their comatose god beyond the horizon. Since 9/11 their gathering had drawn mockers and increasing violence, to the point that police had to be called in to guard their ridiculous ceremonies. I could only imagine them doing the same here, gathering on shores facing the ruins of Manhattan….“How many?” I wondered.

Greg shrugged. “A few, here and there. Not as many as you’d think. Right after 9/11 they were fucking everyplace, but the police ran most of them out of town. The Church of the Great Old Ones had a little storefront on Whateley Street for a little while but the neighborhood, they didn’t take too kindly to them, for obvious reasons. Someone torched the place. I’ve got it on good authority that it was the FDNY themselves did it. The fire only destroyed the cultists building; didn’t damage anything else.”

“That symbol has something to do with them,” I muttered under my breath.

Greg still heard me. “Probably. Who knows. All kinds of whackjobs in this City these days.”

As we passed a building standing all alone between two vacant lots, I saw that the entire base of the building had been spraypainted with weird, jagged designs that almost looked like Egyptian hieroglyphs and, on one side there was a tall white blot where something had been sprayed over in white paint. You could still recognize the outline, though: the huge, cephalopod head, the wings, the bulbous body. One each side of the blob, an eight-pointed star had been painted. In the center of each star, an eyes with a tripartite pupil.

Feeling sick again, I turned away and looked straight ahead at the line of traffic creeping toward the onramp and said nothing. Greg fiddled with the radio until he settled on a classical station playing an odd, frantic violin piece. I closed my eyes, pretending that I hadn’t seen the coils of light writhing sickly in the weeds and brickpiles beneath that malevolent white stain.

Check out the rest of it here: http://footnotes.pegritz.com/2008/07/02/city-of-pillars-chapter-3/

Enjoy! (And BTW: these forums completely suck. What kind of forum doesn't support basic HTML code or even BBcode in posts?)

I've recently started a website, <a href="http://footnotes.pegritz.com"><em>Footnotes to the Human Species</em></a> to publish my Lovecraftian stories, all of which are modernized "sequels" to many of his best-known tales. The basic idea behin the series is: what would the world of H. P. Lovecraft's stories be like today? Well, for one, you don't have "islamofascist" terrorists--you've got Azifists, who, on September 11th, 2001, plow two airplanes into the World Trade Center in an effort to release the larvae of the Other Gods to provide a distraction while they attempt to wake Cthulhu up in R'lyeh. That's the subject of the first story I'm working on, <a href="http://footnotes.pegritz.com/category/city-of-pillars/">"City of Pillars."</a>

I recently had some weird website problems, and the site was down for a while, but it's back now and better than ever. So, umm, have a look, if you like. And feel free to leave comments, positive or negative!

Miss seeing "The Last Winter" at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival this year? Well now is your chance to see it on the big screen! This is a great film and I highly recommend it. Check it out:

THE LAST WINTER opens Friday, December 14st at the Hollywood Theatre

Larry Fessenden, the acclaimed director of intimate horror films such as No Telling, Habit, and Wendigo, explores new ground with this chilling tale of an ancient evil released upon the world due to man’s constant disregard of the environment.

In one of the most pristine landscapes in the world, a ragtag team working to exploit the oil resources of Alaska is tormented by an unseen evil. After one crewmember is found dead near an abandoned drill site, his body naked and contorted into a pose of terror, each member of the team begins to feel disoriented and paranoid. Violent outbreaks and hallucinations follow and soon a distress call is sent out. The more scientific of the team believe that they are reacting to a microorganism that is being released from the thawing ice plains. The native people believe that an ancient spirit, a Wendigo, has come seeking revenge.

The rescue plane is brought down by a malevolent wind, and with little hope of another rescue attempt, two of the surviving members set off into the cold on a desperate bid for survival. Once they leave the camp, the tormentors are finally revealed in a visually stunning finale that will take the audience’s breath away.

In English. 101 minutes. Not Rated. Showing Friday, Monday-Thursday at 9:40pm, Saturday and Sunday at 5:00pm & 9:40pm.

"Far and away the scariest movie of the year - and certainly the smartest... What we don't know, what we don't want to know, what we can't figure out in time; these are the true demons stalking The Last Winter." -- Bob Strauss, L.A. Daily News

"The Call of Sam I’aem"
by H. P. Seuss
Would that I had never agreed to meet with that sinister personage, Sam I’aem.
I was taking a much-needed sabbatical from my tenure at Miskatonic University. I had spent the better part of the week wandering over the hoary New England shoreline. The gray winter skies spread cold comfort through my thought-weary mind. Waves crashed with mindless puissance in their ceaselessly struggle to dominate the grotesquely eroded cliffs. I had stopped to re-tie my boot when I heard the whispered voice:
"Would you try them?"
I spun about to confront my inquisitor, but found only the uncaring tides. Puzzled, I returned to the bed and breakfast that had been my home for the past week.
As I sipped a cup of rather watery coffee, the proprietor of the hostel approached me. She handed me a note, scrawled in a spidery hand upon a paper napkin.
"Would you try them, try them if you can?"
I confronted the proprietor, who told me that the note had been delivered by a peculiar man. She was unable to elucidate, but intimated that he had seemed queer to her, and hinting (only with great reservation) that he exuded the fetid odor of some rotting food. This mysterious visitor had refused to identify himself, promising only to contact me at his earliest convenience. With only this paltry information to go on, I was perplexed. My colleagues knew not where I was, and I had no family in this area. Left with no other choices, I awaited my visitor's appearance.
Still, his cryptic message haunted me. "Would you try them, try them if you can?" It hinted at some forbidden rite, awful in its possibilities.
That evening, he came. He was a short man, if "man" indeed described his breed. His skin was a sickly, baleful yellow color. He seemed to be almost furred, but that was undoubtedly a trick of the poor lantern light in this quaint hostel. His eyes were mesmerizing, seeming to emanate a light of their own. But his smile will be with me until I pass thankfully from what we call life. Whether from some hideous deformity or an unfathomable accident I cannot guess, but his smile seemed to literally stretch from ear to ear. He gestured to me, his oddly lisping voice whispering to me.
"I am Sam. Sam I’aem. Follow, follow if you can." For a moment, I hesitated. He gestured again, a singularly disturbing act, almost more simian than human. Then (foolish man!) I agreed.
We were quickly enveloped by the forbidding night, sight unaided by the inconstant moon. He led on and on, cackling and beckoning with his degenerate lope, to my mind as much an animal motion as human. All the while, he refused my every question, taunting me with his unholy question, "Would you try them, try them if you can?" After a dark eon of travel, we arrived at some sort of alcove. It was then that my tormentor turned to me, teeth flashing wetly in the dim star light. It was then that I noticed the stone slab (or was it an altar?) in the center of the alcove. It was then that I finally understood his profane utterance. My mind reeled at his unholy implication. The wet slap of his feet on the slab, his insane laughter filled my ears.
"I am Sam! Sam I’aem! You will try them, if you can! You will like them..."
At last, mercifully, I let loose the reins of consciousness, and passed into uncaring oblivion.
* * *
I have never again seen the twisted, leering face of Sam I’aem. Whether he still haunts the forbidding crags of that dreary coastline I can only guess. Indeed, I sometimes wonder if the entire incident was not the product of my over-taxed mind. Still, when the raging winds howl in the night, and the flimsy veil of sanity is lifted to show the gibbering horror of our universe, I recall his crazed overture, that insane and blasphemous offer:
"Would you like these brains of man? Would you eat them, if you can?"

Upcoming 2007 Titles
Chaosium books you might see by Christmas.

Chaosium Release Schedule Update

The Secrets of Los Angeles Call of Cthulhu sourcebook (23111, $24.95) has shipped to distributors worldwide. You may be able to find this book in a store near you by the weekend.

Our next Call of Cthulhu Fiction release, Frontier Cthulhu (6041, $14.95) is at the printer and just might be available by Halloween. It includes 15 short stories of horror and exploration.

The Call of Cthulhu rulebook (23106 $34.95), which recently sold through another print run, is likewise at the printer for re-release in November.

There are two more new books that may release this year. The Strange Cases of Rudolph Pearson (6042, $14.95), a fiction anthology by William Jones, is in editing and lay out now. It’s on track for a November or December release.

Our Basic Roleplaying (2020) rulebook has very nearly finished. We’re awaiting the second half of the very last chapter. It’s release by Christmas will depend upon how quickly that material comes in and the speed at which all those words can be turned into a finished book.

Has a mythical beast turned up in Texas?

By ELIZABETH WHITE, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 21 minutes ago

Phylis Canion lived in Africa for four years. She's been a hunter all her life and has the mounted heads of a zebra and other exotic animals in her house to prove it. But the roadkill she found last month outside her ranch was a new one even for her, worth putting in a freezer hidden from curious onlookers: Canion believes she may have the head of the mythical, bloodsucking chupacabra.

"It is one ugly creature," Canion said, holding the head of the mammal, which has big ears, large fanged teeth and grayish-blue, mostly hairless skin.

Canion and some of her neighbors discovered the 40-pound bodies of three of the animals over four days in July outside her ranch in Cuero, 80 miles southeast of San Antonio. Canion said she saved the head of the one she found so she can get to get to the bottom of its ancestry through DNA testing and then mount it for posterity.

She suspects, as have many rural denizens over the years, that a chupacabra may have killed as many as 26 of her chickens in the past couple of years.

"I've seen a lot of nasty stuff. I've never seen anything like this," she said.

What tipped Canion to the possibility that this was no ugly coyote, but perhaps the vampire-like beast, is that the chickens weren't eaten or carried off — all the blood was drained from them, she said.

Chupacabra means "goat sucker" in Spanish, and it is said to have originated in Latin America, specifically Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Canion thinks recent heavy rains ran them right out of their dens.

"I think it could have wolf in it," Canion said. "It has to be a cross between two or three different things."

She said the finding has captured the imagination of locals, just like purported sightings of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster have elsewhere.

But what folks are calling a chupacabra is probably just a strange breed of dog, said veterinarian Travis Schaar of the Main Street Animal Hospital in nearby Victoria.

"I'm not going to tell you that's not a chupacabra. I just think in my opinion a chupacabra is a dog," said Schaar, who has seen Canion's find.

The "chupacabras" could have all been part of a mutated litter of dogs, or they may be a new kind of mutt, he said.

As for the bloodsucking, Schaar said that this particular canine may simply have a preference for blood, letting its prey bleed out and licking it up.

Chupacabra or not, the discovery has spawned a local and international craze. Canion has started selling T-shirts that read: "2007, The Summer of the Chupacabra, Cuero, Texas," accompanied by a caricature of the creature. The $5 shirts have gone all over the world, including Japan, Australia and Brunei. Schaar also said he has one.

"If everyone has a fun time with it, we'll keep doing it," she said. "It's good for Cuero."

“Last weekend one of my gaming buddies and I were talking about surgery. I have surgery coming up this weekend and we were comparing notes. One thing we both realized was that both of us would have died before we were six if not for modern medicine. He had his appendix out at five. My life more or less depends on medication to keep my asthma under control. I’ve had several life-saving trips to the hospital due to severe attacks in my lifetime.

I’ve mused on this sort of thing before, but since we were about to play D&D in a fantasy setting my mind was on it again. In the medieval times people got married at ages that would scandalize us today. They began having sex at a young age, and continued to do so without birth control for their entire lives. Women cranked out babies at an alarming pace, yet the population remained flat. Run those numbers in your head and it becomes clear that people who lived to adulthood where a small minority of the total number of people born. Their lives were bleak, harsh, and filled with death. They died of things that are trivial to fix today.

I wouldn’t have made it. Asthma would have killed me. If that didn’t get me, the infection I had at 20 would have done the job.

My dad would have died six months before I was born.

My mother would have died a few years after I was born.

My friend wouldn’t have made it. He would have died of a burst appendix at five.

I think my brothers and my sister would have made it. (Ignoring the fact that two of them were born after my mother would have died.)

How about you? How long would you have lived in the middle ages? Ignore all the general risks - like typhoid or the plague or cholera - that everyone would have faced in general. Let’s assume you were lucky and missed those. (Unless by some chance you actually DID face one of them in your life.) Also ignore the fact that your deadly injury might have been caused by modern technology, like an auto accident. Just pretend you were trampled by a horse or something. So, given the injuries and illness you’ve faced in your life so far: Did you make it? Would you have survived to your current age?

I don’t want to go on the cart!

I’m curious to see the responses on this one. If you like, post your results to your blog (I’ll link back) and pose the same question to your readers.

(ADDITIONAL: Let’s assume we didn’t die in a flood, or a famine, or get worked to death, or die in a war, or anything else like that. Let’s just go with what’s happened to us in our modern lives. For a lot of us, even that is enough to kill us.)”

Will H.P. Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu fans soon be get to see Great Cthulhu on the big screen?

Last week Transformers movie goers were treated to a 30 second hand camera trailer hinting at something "alive" destroying part of New York City. At about the same time, a viral marketing campaign sprung up on the internet to fuel interest in the upcoming movie project code named Cloverfield, produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Armageddon, etc.) Attempts to post the trailer on the internet have been shut down so far.

You can find two websites that feature Ethan Haas, who has supposedly predicted the return of the gods at Ethanhaaswasright.com and the Ethan Haas Myspace Page. The story has attracted a fair bit of attention on AIN'T IT COOL NEWS as well. Also of interest is the Cloverfield and J.J. Abrams wikipedias. 1-18-08.com may also have information in the near future.

It appears that up until August first we'll all be trying to uncover more about the project on our own. On that date it looks like the real name of the movie will be released along with more information. The movie looks to be releasing in theaters January 18, 2008.

ORFOLK, Va. - Veterinarian Bob George sliced open the dead shark and saw the outline of a fish.

No surprise there, since sharks digest their food slowly.

Then George realized he wasn't looking at the stomach of the blacktip reef shark, but at her uterus. In it was a perfectly formed, 10-inch-long shark pup that was almost ready to be born.

George was dumbfounded.

He had been examining the shark, Tidbit, to figure out why she reacted badly to routine sedatives during a physical and died, hours after biting an aquarium curator on the shin. Now there was a bigger mystery: How did Tidbit get pregnant?

"We must have had hanky panky" in the shark tank, he thought.

But sharks only breed with sharks of the same species, and there were no male blacktip reef sharks at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach.

Could Tidbit have defied nature, resulting in the first known shark hybrid?

The other possibility was that Tidbit had conceived without needing a male at all.

A recent study had documented the first confirmed case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks: a pup born at a Nebraska zoo came from an egg that developed in a female shark without sperm from a male.

One of the scientists who worked on that study contacted the aquarium, which sent him tissue samples from Tidbit and her pup for testing. If the pup's DNA turns out to contain no contribution from a male shark, this would be the second known case of shark parthenogenesis.

George hopes to receive a preliminary report soon, but conclusive results could take months.

Tidbit had lived at the aquarium for most of her 10 years, swimming with other sharks in a 300,000-gallon tank.

The sharks get yearly checkups. On May 24, workers guided the 5-foot, 94-pound Tidbit from the main aquarium into a smaller corral to be examined out of public view.

Blacktip reef sharks are sensitive to change, so it was standard procedure to give Tidbit a sedative. This time, Tidbit went under the sedation too deeply - maybe because of a combination of the unknown pregnancy and the stress of being handled and of having recently been bitten by another shark, George said.

George and Beth Firchau, the curator of fishes, massaged Tidbit's tail to get her blood flowing and gave her a stimulant to help her breathe.

The shark swam away, bumped into a wall, headed back toward Firchau and clamped onto her left shin. Whether Tidbit meant to attack Firchau or just collided into her and snapped reflexively is hard to know.

The pain didn't hit Firchau right away.

"Oh, you're not supposed to do that. That was weird," she thought as she felt the shark tug on her leg.

Members of the shark physicals team pulled Firchau out of the tank and began administering first aid. She credits their swift reaction with saving her life.

Firchau was taken to a hospital to get stitches while George and other team members tried to revive Tidbit. The shark rallied a couple times but died about 12 hours later.

George initially was depressed by the events. But something positive emerged out of the negative.

Since Tidbit hadn't looked pregnant - and there was no reason to think she was pregnant - the pup likely would have been born and immediately eaten by another shark, without aquarium employees ever knowing it had existed.

But Tidbit's death led to George stumbling upon a mystery of nature.

In normal reproduction, an egg is fertilized by sperm, producing an embryo that contains a set of chromosomes with half coming from the mother and half from the father.

In asexual reproduction, an egg splits in two and DNA contributed from the mother doubles, so each resulting egg has a full complement of chromosomes from the female. The eggs then fuse, producing a single embryo with no DNA from a father.

Asexual reproduction is common in some insect species, rarer in reptiles and fish, and has never been documented in mammals. Until now, sharks were not considered likely candidates.

But with sharks, "this is probably something that does happen in aquariums, more often than we realize," said Bob Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Fla.

He said the phenomenon is coming to light with the joint Northern Ireland-U.S. research that analyzed the DNA of a hammerhead shark born in 2001 in the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Neb. The study was published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters on the day before Firchau was bitten.

Asexual reproduction among sharks is more likely to happen in captivity, when there is no other option for reproduction, than in the wild, Hueter said.

Crossbreeding, on the other hand, is not known to happen at all among sharks, said Heather Thomas, aquarist at the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

"It's not natural," Thomas said. "If you've got a shark that needs to swim to breathe and cross it with a shark that can lay on the bottom to breathe, what are you going to get? Are you going to get these weird mutations?"

If the pup indeed turns out to be a hybrid, DNA testing should be able to identify the species of the father. The most likely candidate would be a sandbar shark, the most similar shark to a blacktip reef in the aquarium, George said.

While parthenogenesis "is certainly kind of a spiffy, interesting thing," George hopes the tests confirm crossbreeding, since that would be a first among sharks.

---

*note*~ I'd check to see if any of ye staff members has anything that looks like gills or webbed digits. "Hanky-panky" and "crossbreeding", INDEED, eh?

Global warming is bringing more warmer-climate creatures to Finland, including moths that feast on human blood, according to nature researchers.

Insect-watchers are spotting more and more calpe moths in the Nordic country, which used to be considered too cold for the insects from southeast Asia, Finnish nature magazine "Suomen Luonto" reported in its June edition.

The journal published what it said were the first pictures showing the moths -- calyptra thalictri -- sucking human blood.

The species was first sighted in Finland in 2000, but more than 100 of them have been counted since then, the journal said.

New Zealand fishermen land massive squid

Thu Feb 22, 2:25 AM ET

New Zealand fishermen may have caught the largest Colossal squid ever found -- weighing around 450kg (992 pounds) and with rings the size of tyres.

The adult Colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) was caught by fishermen long lining for toothfish in deep ocean off Antarctica, New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton said on Thursday in announcing the catch.

The squid was still alive when caught and was eating a hooked toothfish when hauled aboard, Anderton said in a statement.

"The squid was almost dead when it reached the surface, and the careful work of the crew was paramount in getting this specimen aboard in good condition," Anderton said.

"The crew stopped winching in the longline for two hours, while the squid was manoeuvred into a cargo net and hauled aboard," he said.

The squid was frozen in the ship's hull and brought back to New Zealand for scientific examination.

"The colossal squid has just arrived in New Zealand and it is likely that it is the first intact adult male Colossal squid to ever be successfully landed," Anderton said.

Colossal squid are one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean, growing up to 12 to 14 metres (36 to 42 feet) in length. Anderton said the squid would be photographed, measured, tissue sampled, registered and preserved intact.

"On-going examination of this giant will help to unlock some of the mysteries of the deep ocean. Even basic questions such as such as how large does this species grow to, and how long does it live for are not yet known," he said.

Local media said early estimates put the squid at 10 metres (30 feet) in length and weighing 450 kg (992 pounds) -- 150 kg (330 pounds) heavier than the next biggest specimen found.

"I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest. It is truly amazing," squid expert Steve O'Shea at Auckland University of Technology told local media.

O'Shea said if calamari were made from the Colossal squid's rings it would be the size of tractor tyres.

Anderton said Colossal squid were found in Antarctic waters and were not related to Giant squid (Architeuthis) found around the coast of New Zealand. Giant squid also grow up to 12 metres (36 feet), but are not as heavy.
Lovecraft was not only a Rhode Islander, but an Anglophile. The British and New England pronunciation of the word is "Dun-Itch," consistent with not just British cities, but, say for example, Greenwich in Connecticut. The incorrect way would be the same as pronouncing "Worcestershire" (in Britain) as "Wor-Cester-Shire." Any Brit would either laugh at you or smack you. W is pronounced as "Woosta-sher," and American towns and cities named by British custom would follow as well.

There was an excellent video tribute to the Cthulhu Mythos done as a movie. It's called "Cast A Deadly Spell", and can still be found in some video stores, sadly, only in VHS.

Veteran B-Movie actor Fred Ward plays H. Philip Lovecraft, a private investigator in an alternate 1947 Los Angeles (where everybody does magic). He's hired by Amos Hackshaw (David Warner) to find his stolen copy of the Necronomicon before midnight on a certain day. The movie is replete with demons, ancient monsters, lots of film-noir props. The dialogue is composed entirely of cliches! It's a lot of fun.

A sequel was made set in 1955 with Dennis Hopper as the P.I.

Forget the sharks, its the tiny bluebottle jellyfish that will probably get you if you decide to take a cooling swim in the surf during Australia's hot summer.

At least 30,000 swimmers suffered painful stings from bluebottle jellyfish, called "blueys", on the country's east coast in 2006, double the number from the previous year.

"They come in invasions called armadas," Lisa-Ann Gershwin, marine stinger adviser with Australia's Surf Life Saving Association, told Reuters.

"They are driven by the wind onto our beaches where they will invade for a couple of days and then they're just gone."

Bluebottle jellyfish, with a bright blue translucent body and long tentacles, invaded the Gold Coast tourist beaches in tropical Queensland state earlier in January, stinging some 1,200 swimmers in one weekend.

The jellyfish measure around 10-15cm and have stinging tentacles sometimes metres long. The whispy tentacles often wrap around swimmers legs, arms or bodies, sometimes breaking off, causing a sharp, painful sting and welts.
